Procedure Steps:

• Turn off the power supply. Protect yourself against electrocution, do not touch any electrical devices in the flooded area.
• Turn off circuit breakers supplying electricity to wet areas, unplug and remove any small electrical devices on wet carpet. 
• Close off the water valve or leaking source.
• Remove possessions to dry area to avoid damage. Remove valuable paintings and art objects to a safe, dry place.
• Gather loose items, toys etc from floors.

 

Tips not to do:

• To prevent electric shock don't use your household vacuum cleaner to suck up any flooded water.
• To prevent stains don’t leave books, magazines or other coloured items on wet carpets or floors. 
• Don’t use TVs or other household appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
• Collect wet fabrics off the floor and dry as soon as possible.
• If ceiling fixtures are wet don’t turn on and stay out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

• Phone a licenced service company to eliminate the water source or make necessary repairs as required.
• To prevent damage, place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs.
• To prevent watermarks and dye marks hang drapes and pin up furniture skirts. 
• If required arrange a restoration crew to move large furniture to a specified dry area.
