Fleas are a very real health hazard as they are vectors of many diseases including salmonella, tape worm, typhus, even bubonic plague, and other fevers.
-
Common fleas are cat fleas associated with biting humans. They prefer to feed on the blood of cats but if there are a large number of fleas or the normal cat hosts have been removed they will readily bite humans.
-
Female fleas lay several hundred eggs onto host animals in her lifetime. The larvae feed on dust found in carpets and bedding around where the human or pet lives. It will lie dormant and pupate until it detects the presence of a human or pest by heat and vibrations.
-
Once dedected adults quickly emerge and jump onto the host beginning to feed by biting and sucking blood. When the adult flea has finished feeding on its blood meal it will drop off the host finding a place to hide until hungry again.
-
Usually hiding in bedding areas or anywhere they can find shelter. The treatment of the host's living areas are as important as treating the animal as fleas spend more time off than on the host.
